What is an Afterburner?

An afterburner, also known as a thermal oxidizer or T.O., is a pollution control device used to eliminate unwanted emissions and odors produced during manufacturing processes. While commonly associated with coffee roasting, afterburners are used across a wide range of industries to treat emissions through a process called thermal oxidization.

In the coffee industry, roasting produces dark, smoky emissions that contain harmful pollutants such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), CO₂, NOx, and CO. These pollutants not only damage the environment but can also create unpleasant odors that affect both roasters and neighboring businesses. Without proper emission control, coffee roasters risk violating local regulations, which could lead to fines or even forced shutdowns.

An effective afterburner works by oxidizing these waste gases, using high heat to convert pollutants into cleaner emissions. This allows businesses to meet environmental standards without compromising the quality of their roast.

How Do Afterburners Work?

The efficiency of an afterburner is based on three core principles, often referred to as the three Ts:

  1. Time – Pollutants must remain in the combustion chamber long enough to fully break down through combustion.

  2. Temperature – The combustion process must reach high enough temperatures to effectively remove smoke and odor. Coffee roasting emissions typically begin to break down around 800–900°F, but full odor removal often requires at least 1250°F.

  3. Turbulence – Proper mixing of combustion air and pollutants is key. The more turbulence inside the chamber, the more efficient the oxidization process becomes.

By combining these elements, afterburners significantly reduce harmful emissions and help maintain cleaner air for everyone.
