When we added Lighttells to CoffeeTec’s Vendor Marketplace, we wrote an in-depth, feature-length article about how Lightells’ products—namely, their Color Analyzer and Moisture and Density Meter—are indispensable tools in the roast master’s arsenal for managing and refining roasting profiles. Now we’d like to offer a quick refresher about why we love Lighttells and why, at a relatively low cost, their products offer a lot of bang for the buck.
Lighttells was established in March 2014 by a group of skilled and innovative IT engineers. Based in Taiwan and distributing worldwide, Lighttells focuses on spectrum technology for food and coffee inspection.
Thanks to their engineers loving coffee as much as they do, their first product line—featuring their Color Analyzer and Moisture and Density Meter—is devoted to allowing roasters greater consistency and quality control of their roasted coffee products.
We all know that roasting is a beautiful blend of art, sensory instinct, and science—and it takes time to understand how these factors play off of each other. Honing your instincts is critical, but having reliable tools that give you concrete, measured, clear information about your coffee is vitally important to running a consistent and reliable coffee roasting program.
This is what Lighttells’ Color Analyzer and Moisture-Density Meter tools offer. Specifically, they allow for:
And tools like these can be sanity savers. Let’s look more closely at each of these high-performance coffee roasting power tools.
Lighttells’ Color Analyzer CM-100 helps you read and classify the roasting degree, or the delta, between whole bean and ground in order to get a better understanding of the roasting curve and roasting result — as well as the consistency.
Whether you are a roasting vendor, coffee shop owner, or home roaster, the Lighttells color reader supports fast key, has high accuracy measurements, and can work up to six continuous hours.
Easy to carry as well as easy to store, this is frankly the most bang for the buck on the market.
One of the few color readers in the world approved by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) which sets the standards for reliable, accurate instruments for measuring roasted coffee beans and coffee grounds.
Lighttells' Moisture & Density Meter MD500 reads for cherry, parchment, green beans, and roasted beans. It also featuers a unique weight calibration to obtain incredibly accurate density readings. Portable and easy to use, just fill your coffee beans into the hopper, choose the bean type, and then click to measure. You can download your measurement history into your computer to archive and track your results.
The MD500 determines the moisture level in your coffee beans during the roasting process or even after you’ve stored it. It also works for cocoa beans and other roasting products. Green beans’ average moisture can vary between 45% and 55%—though the International Coffee Organization recommends that the maximum moisture content of coffee beans before roasting should be between 8% and 12%. By using a unit like Lighttells’ MD500, you can better control the drying process.
